PLAYLIST: City Pop
NEXT WEEK: New Music April, a roundup of the best new music, straight to your inbox.
Hey gang, happy Friday once more!
This week's Subscribers Only MixedTape highlights the weird and wonderful genre "City Pop," a more sophisticated variant of J-Pop that started in the 80s as Japan's answer to Disco and the funkier side of Western Pop Rock.
As the genre evolved, it developed a signature whimsical element to the sound, while keeping up with Western Pop's concurrent evolution, incorporating everything from Yacht Rock to Quiet Storm R&B. City Pop manages to congeal jazzy grooves, New Wave keyboards, Funky basslines and Soul singing into playful, bouncy, extremely catchy tunes; no small feat.
