This week in Subscribers Only we're continuing our ongoing series exploring artists who hail from specific states. Last time we zoomed in on Minnesota (check it out), this week: North Carolina!

More great musicians have come from NC than any single playlist could do justice. Jazz giants like John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk and Max Roach and Country legends like Earl Scruggs, Randy Travis and Charlie Daniels have been left by the wayside, though their impact on pop music and culture is undeniable.

Rather, we're focusing primarily on independent artists that bring their local flavor into their music. That means the Neo-Folk/Americana sounds of Charlotte, the Chapel Hill Indie Rock scene, the grunge-country of Asheville, as well as some classics to boot.

So grab your headphones, park yourself beneath the nearest Dogwood tree and enjoy the vibrant sounds of NC.
